Boys In The Basement

Even without consciously willing it, our minds are tirelessly working, conjuring scenarios and daring to imagine the impossible. So much that it is often difficult to sit quietly, void of any thoughts. As writers, we take those impossible imaginations and bring them to life on paper.

However, it takes conscious effort to harness these subconscious thoughts, these "boys in the basement," as Stephen King terms it. We need to make out time to pull up those hardworking boys to the ground floor. Your story itches to tell its tale as much as you do. All you have to do is listen.

A good opportunity to seize this chance is right when you wake up—when your brain is refreshed and raring to go—or right before working on a scene. Sit for five minutes and let your thoughts run wildly; you can also whip out a pen and paper to pour it all out. Don't mind whether what comes out makes sense or not. Don't let the possible lack of logic snuff out your mojo. Your only goal in that moment is to let the floodgates of inspiration open wide.

Let's kick off this week with loosening the reigns on our thoughts. Don't be afraid to work those boys down there to the bone. Happy writing!
